How to Get Gorgeous Skin Before You Put on Makeup

We’ve all spent lots of time and even more money at those cosmetic superstores or local pharmacies- browsing, sampling, and ultimately buying a bunch of products that help us fix or hide imperfections on our skin. Not to say we don’t need makeup, but there are lots of ways to keep your complexion glowing and healthy before you ever apply foundation. Let’s go over a few smart ways to keep your skincare routine basic and brilliant.

Before Anything Else…

Here’s a perfect rule of thumb to keep in mind: If it’s good for your body, it’s good for your skin. Healthy choices have endless benefits, so consider a few of these everyday routines.

Hydration: Seems like basic stuff, but we almost never drink enough water. This affects everything, from energy levels to focus, and your skin is no exception. When you are properly hydrated, your skin will look bright and clear…if it’s looking dull and flaky, that’s a good indicator you need more; most experts advise drinking at least a half-gallon a day. Many Eastern philosophies recommend room temperature water, as it is less disrupting to your system, but whatever the temperature, make sure you get enough.

Exercise: Like hydrating, we all could probably use a little more exercise, and it’s good for all of your bodily functions. Complexion wise, getting a good sweat on opens up your pores and releases toxins and impurities, which is great for your skin. Make sure to replenish those fluids and rinse off all that perspiration, and you’ve had yourself a detoxifying facial!

Sleep: With our busy lives and crazy schedules, regular sleep can be hard to come by. But we need to try, because sleep’s restorative powers power up your brain and your body. This includes your skin, because we all know what your eyes look like on just a couple hours of sleep. Pay attention to your sleep hygiene, and get your rest.

Sun: Dermatologists can all agree on one indisputable fact: too much sun is terrible for your skin. Apart from the life-threatening chance of melanomas, it also gives you sun spots, wrinkles, and a premature aging look. If you want that sun-kissed glow, opt for all-natural bronzers instead of basking in those rays. And, obviously, cover up: wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, adequate clothing coverage, and, of course, skin-friendly sunscreen. Your future self will thank you.

Going Natural

There are plenty of age-old home skin treatments that can give you amazing looking skin without any expensive products. In fact, you may even have some of these natural powerhouses around the house right now. Check out a few of these remedies, and get your home spa going!

Apple Cider Vinegar: This commonly found condiment is actually an ancient cure for both internal and external issues. A natural anti-fungal and antimicrobial agent when used topically, apple cider vinegar can treat acne and other skin lesions. Taken internally, it promotes the beneficial bacteria microbiome in the gut, and also has healthy vitamins like magnesium to help promote glowing skin. Try a diluted face splash, and add a splash in your morning glass of water sweetened with a drizzle of raw honey.

Raw Honey: Aside from giving a sweet touch to your cider vinegar drink, raw honey is one of the most potent medicinal natural substances found in nature. It has been used as an antimicrobial wound healer and skin soother for centuries, way before honey was pasteurized and processed to sit on shelves. If you can find real raw honey, make sure you grab some right away. You can apply it directly to your face for a healing treatment, then just rinse off with warm water.

Avocado: As much as you love avocado toast or homemade guacamole, it’s worth grabbing a few extra at the market for a luxurious facial treatment. Rich in natural antioxidant Vitamins A, D, and E, you can slather ripe avocado right on to your face for an anti-inflammatory hydrating mask, and even combine it with raw honey for maximum benefits.

The Finishing Touch

Even if you follow all the tips above, there are still a few methods you can utilize to maximize your pre-makeup routine. Before you go to your normal cleanser/moisturizer routine, try some of the hottest tools on the market to get your complexion just right.

The Nurysh Lyft: This all-in-one handheld wand gives you a powerful trio of beneficial skincare treatments in one small package. Combining LED light therapy, ion therapy, and facial massage, you can customize your own spa-quality skincare treatments right in your own home.

Dr. Dennis Gross Pro Facial Steamer: This sleek little countertop steamer both hydrates your face and  opens and detoxifies your pores. Giving yourself a quick steam before you apply your regular products optimizes your treatment quickly and effectively.

Herbivore Jade Facial Roller: Based on ancient Chinese beauty methods, this beautifully crafted roller helps to tone your face, move lymphatic fluid, and gently push your favorite serum or oil into your skin for maximum absorption. Plus, it feels cooling and soothing, and can even reduce stress.
